Navigating HE (Scotland)
Introduction, insight and professional connection building opportunity
Course Description
Taking up a role in the Higher Education (HE) sector can sometimes feel like a daunting experience. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are complex organisations, especially when considering funding, structure, governance, decision making and the relationships between students, research bodies and the commercial world. Each HEI has been described as a unique village community. Developing a broad understanding of what makes HEI different to other sectors and organisations can really help to improve one’s ability to work effectively and perform within them. This intensive programme helps to provide this context. SESSION 1: Introduction to HE in Scotland; explore current and future challenges facing HE; unravel the interrelatedness of other HE agencies; grow understanding of the financing of universities, and the importance of research, teaching and ‘third-leg’ activities SESSION 2: Identify the provenance of institutions and discuss the impact of this on the HEI’s strategy; consider how universities run themselves and how external stakeholders are involved, and consider the complexity of universities and the professional services provided SESSION 3: Focus on communication and culture; university structures and hierarchy, and university governance and decision-making process. The benefits of this programme include; (1) developing connections and building professional relationships with like-minded colleagues across the sector, (2) learning about your university within the broader context and how decisions are made and communicated; how these relate to your own objectives, and (3) gaining insight and know-how from dedicated career specialists in HE, to help you reflect and scope your career development. The event is intended for new starters in the HE sector and for those requiring an update on current challenges in the sector. This programme is structured into 3 sessions to provide an opportunity to network with colleagues from across the HE sector in Scotland. Each 2-hour session will be delivered over 3 consecutive weeks. Next cohort dates for this online facilitator-led synchronous training will be scheduled soon. Please contact us with your interest or for on-demand requests at a date to suit your group needs. Cohort size: min 8, max 12. Participants will be required to complete tasks and activities with fellow delegates, to help network and learn from each other. 20% group discount is available (6+ people).
